SMBA

Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA) is a project space of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, located in the city centre. The objective of SMBA is to present contemporary art from an Amsterdam context and therefore to create an international platform by organizing exhibitions, lectures, debates, publications and residency programmes. Jelle Bouwhuis is the current curator of SMBA.

Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam was founded in 1993. In 2007 its mission statement was formulated as follows:

"Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam provides a space for contemporary artists in an Amsterdam context by presenting their work and ideas as advantageous as possible. SMBA tries to find inherent inducements present in their work and ideas in order to create, and give guidance to, an engaged discourse that reaches further then the art world alone."

SMBA presents an average of six exhibitions a year in its project space located in the Rozenstraat. Apart from exhibitions, this space is also regularly suited for lectures, debates and (book) presentations. In addition to the home base there are other projects initiated by SMBA scattered around the city at various locations. Since 2008 the Bureau organises the annual international visiting programme for curators called 'Close Connections'. SMBA is also involved in projects like the lecture series 'Now is the Time' (2008/2009), the manifestation 'My Name is Spinoza' (2009) and is also co-organiser of the regular BijlmAIR residency projects, the South Axis Artist in Residence and, in 2009, the Red Artist in Residence in the city centre. These residencies enable the selected artists to reflect on various aspects relevant to the respective urban districts.

Some projects of Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam result in a publication. In addition, the bilingual SMBA Newsletter appears six times a year with information regarding the ongoing projects, containing contributions from specialists from the Netherlands and abroad.
