Book Launch: Militant Bourgeois
29/05/2007

As the final chapter in the ‘Militant Bourgeois: An Existential Retreat’ project by the artist Chris Evans, on May 29 the publication of the same title will be launched. In addition to a conversation between Evans and Jelle Bouwhuis, the curator of SMBA, on this evening a number of the artists who have stayed in the Retreat will present work that was created during the time they spent there.

The evening is the close of an extensive project by Evans in cooperation with SMBA, which had its roots in a show in the exhibition space and the residence project in Amsterdam Westpoort. Ultimately almost twenty artists participated in the retreat. All regard this period as very productive. Among others, Kaleb de Groot, Joris Lindhout, Anja Sijben, Niels Vis and Pedro Bakker will show work that they produced during their retreat.

In addition to visual material, the book also includes three essays, by Alex Farquharson, Robert Garnett and Jan Verwoert. The design is by Stuart Bailey. Militant Bourgeois is already available at SMBA for Euro 15,-.
