Call for BijlmAIR 2013
15/08/2012

BijlmAIR is the Artist-in-Residence Programme of Centrum Beeldende Kunst Zuidoost (CBK Zuidoost – center of visual arts), Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA) and Stichting FLAT (FLAT foundation).

For 2013 BijlmAIR invites artists and other cultural producers to live and work temporarily in Amsterdam Southeast . This period can be used for project research or for realisation of a project or work of art, following a relevant proposal made by the applicant. The selection committee of the participating organisations decides which proposals will be chosen.

The residency needs to relate to the transnational and intercultural society of Amsterdam Southeast. This can be done on all kinds of levels – urban, sociological, economical, historical, etc. The programme is primarily meant for young artists from the Netherlands and abroad, who finished their art education recently and are almost ready to enter the circuit of the larger art institutions.

BijlmAIR aims to present the different residencies in 2013 at the end of the year.

Flying Boxes etc.
08/08/2012

Sunday, 12 August 2012
5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

This Sunday, ‘The Memories Are Present’ exhibition closes with Flying Boxes etc., a lecture/performance by Christoph Westermeier. During the event, Westermeier illustrates and comments on the development of object photography over the past 60 years. Absurd image compositions, errant shadows and flying objects will be the focus of the event.

Flying Boxes etc. illuminates the artistic work process that informs and precedes Westermeier’s final works, one of which is presented in ‘The Memories Are Present’. The artist contributed the installation Barbarian & Classics to this exhibition, consisting of photographs he made of postcards and other image resources depicting objects from diverse museum collections. Westermeier re-photographed these resources according to his own, overtly subjective, standards. Generally speaking, Westermeier’s work emphasizes exactly those technical mistakes which professional object photographers try to avoid or conceal through manipulation.

Sunday afternoon will also be the last chance to see Westermeier’s Barbarian & Classics in this exhibition, which further features an installation by Artun Alaska Arasli and a selection of works by Pauline M’barek.

The lecture/performance will be in English.

Really exotic?
17/06/2012

Location: Kriterion, Roetersstraat 170 1018 WE Amsterdam
Admission: €5, free with Cineville pas
Reservation via Kriterion: 020-6231708

What is still regarded as exotic in our day of media globalization, 24-hour news of the world and Google Earth? In an experimental and inquiring way, the videos presented in this programme take us along on a visual, transcultural expedition in search of the exotic. The programme does not aim to find an ultimate proof or meaning of the exotic. Rather a variety of perspectives are brought together to show the multiple understandings and uses of this burdened concept. In each film a form of the exotic comes to the fore, but every time in a different environment and setting.

An overview of the programme including short descriptions of all the video can be found on the Project '1975' blog.

The current cultural and political situation in the Netherlands is one that encourages the belief that its postcolonial history is a closed chapter before it has even been written. The reality is that the Netherlands is only now beginning to reflect critically on its colonial past. Art institutions and their strategies of classification, valorization, and display have, only half-heartedly been informed by postcolonial studies, if at all.

This symposium seeks answers to this challenging situation, presenting a range of institutional practices and scholarly insights to examine a specific aspect of these practices: the exhibition itself and the exhibition strategies that go alongside it.

A characteristic feature of Madani’s works is that they have the power to direct the viewer’s imagination in a variety of ways. Often they appear to be felicitous snapshots depicting just one moment in a possibly much more extensive narrative, seducing the viewer to fill in the missing elements by thinking of all kinds of personal memories and references. Accordingly, during this tour Zego will not restrict her comments to informative details about Madani’s practice, but in an unconventional manner will relate what comes to her mind in response to the works.
