Scenographies Prologues Reading Group
10/09/2013

As a part of the Scenographies programme a series of Prologues will be held in SMBA. Prologues were used as a dramatic device in Elizabethan theatre, setting the scene for each act in the play. Adapting this strategy in a discursive manner, curator and researcher Alexandra Landré will engage each contributor to the Scenographies programme in a series of Prologues. Creating a context around each project, these discussions will bring new insights, draw in theoretical debates, and raise some probing questions concerning the possibilities of public artistic and archival approaches.

A reading group will preceed each public Prologue. If you would like to join the group and receive readings please send an email:
scenographiesprologues@gmail.com
Please note that there is limited capacity of places.

Call for BijlmAIR 2014
05/09/2013

BijlmAIR is the Artist-in-Residence Programme of Centrum Beeldende Kunst Zuidoost (CBK Zuidoost – center of visual arts), Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA) and Stichting FLAT (FLAT foundation).

For 2014 BijlmAIR invites artists and other cultural producers to live and work temporarily in Amsterdam Southeast. This period can be used for project research or for realisation of a project or work of art, following a relevant proposal made by the applicant. The selection committee of the participating organisations decides which proposals will be chosen.
The residency needs to relate to the transnational and intercultural society of Amsterdam Southeast. This can be done on all kinds of levels – urban, sociological, economical, historical, etc. The programme is primarily meant for young artists from the Netherlands and abroad, who finished their art education recently and are almost ready to enter the circuit of the larger art institutions. BijlmAIR aims to present the different residencies in 2014 at the end of the year.

Lecture by Joshua Simon
27/08/2013

August 27 2013
Time: 8:00 P.M.

Together with Galerie Martin van Zomeren, Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam organizes a lecture of Joshua Simon on the occasion of his new book Neomaterialism (Sternberg Press, 2013).

Since the so-called dematerialization of currencies and art practices in the late 1960s and early 1970, we have witnessed a move into what can be called an economy of neomaterialism, where our role is to absorb surpluses. With this, several shifts have occurred: the commodity has become the historical subject, the focus of labor has shifted from production to consumption, and symbols now behave like materials. With, debt, rather than alienation, as the underlining notion forming our relation to things, the presentation and following will explore the language of those things through dialectical materialism and the dialect of material.

Diego Tonus – Processing Authorities
03/07/2013

3 July – 7 July 2013

Opening: 3 July, 6-9 p.m.

Diego Tonus’s Processing Authorities is a work in progress that concentrates on gavels as symbolic instruments used to install and process authority. The starting point for the work is a unique and obscure collection of gavels that belongs to the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam. These hammers were used in assemblies of Dutch emancipatory movements in the 19th and 20th centuries for calling the meeting to order or marking the conclusion of collective decisions. The Institute collected the hammers over the years when they became redundant as the organizations dissolved. This is the first time that all of the 52 hammers have been presented to the public outside the IISH.

Presentation and interview Wilfredo Prieto
06/06/2013

June 6, 2013, 8:00 p.m.
Language: English
Admission free, reservations through: mail@smba.nl

Together with visual artist and researcher Paula Salas SMBA has organized an artist talk and an interview with Wilfredo Prieto, one of the participating artists in the current exhibition The Right to the City. The interview will be preceded by a brief introduction by guest curator Madelon van Schie.

As a nomadic artist active in various parts of the world Prieto has developed a visual idiom that coincides with an international artistic language. Although his work can sometimes still be connected to a local Cuban background, one can perceive a trend towards a more universally bound idiom in his art. How does Prieto manage to preserve his ‘signature’? And what strategies does he use to address local or global issues in ways that are meaningful for the specific communities that relate to his works? These are some questions that will be raised during the interview.

The exhibition ‘Hollandaise’ opens in Dakar
09/04/2013

10 April – 1 June 2013

Opening: Wednesday 10 April, 6:30 – 9 pm.

RAW Material Company, Dakar, Senegal

It is with great pride that SMBA announces the exhibition 'Hollandaise, a journey into an iconic fabric' in RAW Material Company, Dakar. The exhibition was on show at SMBA from 3 November 2012 until 6 January 2013. The background of the exhibition 'Hollandaise' is the long-standing economic relations between the Netherlands and the African continent. The title refers to the colorful printed fabrics that are exported from the Netherlands to Africa, and therefore popularly known as Hollandaise or Dutch Wax. It was Dutch textile enterprises such as Vlisco which developed commercial applications for Javanese batik in the 19th century, and found their largest market in West Africa. Today the brightly colored fabric is regarded as typically African. But in fact it is the result of complex globalization processes that right down to this day exhibit colonial features.

Koyo Kouoh is the curator of Hollandaise, which was commissioned by SMBA in the framework of 'Project 1975'.
